  • Cosmetic Dentistry at Rathfarnham Dental: Veneers, Teeth whitening and more

We all notice a beautiful smile. At Rathfarnham Dental Practice, we pride ourselves in only using state-of-the-art treatment materials and protocols, which are supported by research. If you are interested in enhancing your smile, we are happy to discuss all the options with you. Below are some things to consider:

Composite restorations are white fillings. Traditionally metal fillings were used at the back of the mouth in preference to composite fillings because they are healthy and were longer lasting. Demand for white back teeth has forced researchers to produce better white composite fillings. Modern high quality composite fillings when correctly placed are now as good as the traditional metal fillings in most circumstances. Visible old metal fillings can be replaced for cosmetic reasons.

Teeth Whitening is the process of lightening the colour of the teeth, which may have become stained or darker over time. In keeping with EU legislation, we provide this treatment via a dentist prescribed at home kit. This treatment involves nightly use of a bleaching gel in custom fitted trays for your upper and lower teeth. This method of teeth whitening is safe and effective. Dental sensitivity is minimal and can be resolved using sensitive toothpaste during the course of treatment. Whitening can be easily topped up at any later stage if so desired.

As fillings, crowns and bridges do not respond to whitening in the same way as natural teeth, we recommend that you consider replacement of these in aesthetically visible areas.

Dental Veneers are wafer-thin shell-like layers of tooth coloured material, which are bonded to the surface of the tooth to improve the appearance. Various types are available comprising of porcelain, ceramic and composite materials. Veneers are used to transform crooked, stained, damaged or badly worn teeth into a new, straight, white smile.

Given that veneers are very thin, they can be prone to fracture if placed in an unsuitable patient or not meticulously maintained. We are happy to assess your smile to see whether veneers are a viable option for you.

Orthodontics or braces aim to correct crooked, malaligned teeth. While commonly used in the early teen years, there has been a growing demand among adults for this treatment. Different malalignments require different treatment types. Most require fixed “train-tracks” to accurately position the teeth, but in limited circumstances removable “retainers” or Invisalign type appliances can be used. Treatment time varies but for most people it takes 1-2 years. Long term retainers are usually necessary to maintain the position of the teeth.

Gum Surgery can be performed to reshape the scalloped edge of the gum line to enhance the cosmetics of the teeth. Some people have good looking teeth but an uneven gum margin that is unsightly. Surgical correction by re-contouring or grafting onto the gum can in some cases make a huge smile enhancement.
